Sad to report the recent death of Sister Mary O'Hara, an American Sister of St Joseph of Carondolet, who was one of the few experts in the English speaking world on the philosophy of Alphonse Gratry.

She took part in the Alphonse Gratry Colloquy at the Senate in Paris in 2006.

Her book on the philosophy of Gratry is in the final stages of preparation for publication.

It will be a fitting testament to her lifelong work.

Greatly ignored today, Gratry, who was one of the major influences on young Cardijn, was a major proponent of the inductive as opposed to the traditional top down deductive approach to Christian teaching.

As such, Gratry was a key influence on the development of Cardijn's See Judge Act approach, canonised by Pope John XXIII in Mater and Magistra and followed in teh drafting of the Vatican II Constitution on the Church in the World of Today, Gaudium et Spes.

In a sense, it is fitting that her death came in the very month that marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the work on Schema XVII (later Schema XIII) which became became Gaudium et Spes.
